MAAPP Policies
Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP)
Effective Date: January 1, 2025
I. Introduction
As a sports coach committed to the safety and well-being of all athletes, I, Gilberto Cortez, have adopted the following Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP). This policy aligns with the U.S. Center for SafeSport’s 2025 MAAPP guidelines and aims to prevent abuse and misconduct in sports.
II. Applicability
This policy applies to all interactions between adult participants and minor athletes under my supervision. Adult participants include coaches, staff, volunteers, and any other individuals who interact with minor athletes.
III. Education & Training
- Mandatory Training: All adult participants must complete the SafeSport® Trained Core Course before engaging with minor athletes and annually thereafter.
- Parent Training: Parents/guardians are encouraged to complete training on preventing and reporting child abuse, which is available at SafeSport Trained.
IV. One-on-One Interactions
- Observable and Interruptible: All one-on-one interactions between an adult participant and a minor athlete must be observable and interruptible, except in emergency situations or previously approved scenarios like solo training rides, etc.
- Meetings: Meetings should occur in open, public areas. If privacy is required, the meeting must be observable and interruptible.
V. Individual Training Sessions
- Consent: Written consent from a minor athlete’s parent/guardian is required before any individual training sessions. Parents/guardians must be allowed to observe the session.
VI. Manual Therapy and Therapeutic Modalities
- Professional Providers: Any manual therapy or therapeutic modalities must be performed by a licensed professional in an observable and interruptible environment.
- Consent: Written consent from a minor athlete’s parent/guardian is required before any such treatments.
VII. Locker Rooms and Changing Areas
- Supervision: Adult participants must not be alone with a minor athlete in a locker room or changing area.
- Recording Devices: The use of recording devices is prohibited in locker rooms and changing areas.
VIII. Electronic Communications
- Professionalism: All electronic communications between adult participants and minor athletes must be professional.
- Transparency: Parents/guardians should be copied on all electronic communications, or have access to the communications with minor athletes.
IX. Transportation
- Parental Consent: Adult participants must not transport minor athletes one-on-one without prior written consent from the minor’s parent/guardian.
X. Lodging
- Room Sharing: Adult participants must not share sleeping arrangements with minor athletes unless written consent is provided by the minor’s parent/guardian.
XI. Reporting
Violations of this policy should be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities. Reports can also be made to the U.S. Center for SafeSport at SafeSport Report.
XII. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with the latest guidelines and best practices.
